Jesus is Coming, the Dead shall Arise
Jesus promised to return
Revelation 22: 12, 20 " ‘And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work.’ . . . He who testifies to these things says, ‘Surely I am coming quickly.’ Amen. Even so, come Lord Jesus!"
John 14: 1-3 " ‘Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also."
Matthew 24: 27, 30 " ‘For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes to the west, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. . . . then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.’ "
Angels reassured the disciples that Jesus would return
Acts 1: 9-11 "Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, who also said, ‘Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven."
The early Christians taught that the dead will arise when Jesus’ returns
John 5:28-29 "Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come forth – those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation."
I Thessalonians 4: 16-17 "For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord."
I Corrinthians 15: 20, 23 "But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. . . . But each one in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are Christ’s at His coming."
Revelation 1:7 "Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, and they also who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen."
Jesus taught that He will raise up His believers at the last day.
"This is the will of the Father who sent Me, that of all He has given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day." John 6:39
"And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day." John 6:40
"No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day." John 6:44
"Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day." John 6:54
Old Testament writers prophesied about the Lord coming with power and great glory at the End-Time
Jude 14 "Now Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men also, saying, ‘Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints, to execute judgment on all, to convict all who are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.’ "
Daniel 12: 1-2 "At that time Michael shall stand up, the great Prince who stands watch over the sons of your people; and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation, even to that time. And at that time your people shall be delivered, every one who is found written in the book. And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, some to shame and everlasting contempt."
Daniel 7:13 "I was watching in the night visions, and behold, One like the Son of Man, coming with the clouds of heaven! . . . Then to Him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and His kindgom the one which shall not be destroyed."
Daniel 2: 34, 35, 44 "You watched while a stone was cut out without hands, which struck the image on its feet of iron and clay, and broke them in pieces, . . . And the stone that struck the image became a great mountain and filled the whole earth. . . . And in the days of these kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed; and the kingdom shall not be left to other people; it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever."
Daniel 12:13 ""But you [Daniel], go your way till the end; for you shall rest, and will arise to your inheritance at the end of the days."
Jesus taught that death is a sleep
Luke 8: 49-50, 52-55 (Jairus’s Daughter is Raised) "While He was still speaking, someone came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house, saying to him, ‘Your daughter is dead, do not trouble the Teacher.’ But when Jesus heard it, He answered him, saying, ‘Do not be afraid; only believe, and she will be made well.’ . . . Now all wept and mourned for her, but He said, ‘Do not weep; she is not dead, but sleeping.’ And they laughed Him to scorn, knowing that she was dead. But He put them all out, took her by the hand and called, saying, ‘Little girl, arise.’ Then her spirit returned, and she arose immediately. And He commanded that she be given something to eat."
John 11: 1, 4, 11-14, 17, 23-27, 39-44 (Jesus Raises Lazarus from the Dead) "Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. . . . When Jesus heard that, He said, ‘This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.’ . . . These things He said, and after that He said to them. ‘Our friend Lazarus sleeps, but I go that I may wake him up.’ Then His disciples said, ‘Lord, if he sleeps he will get well.’ However, Jesus spoke of his death, but they thought that He was speaking about taking rest in sleep. Then Jesus said to them plainly, ‘Lazurus is dead.’ . . . So when Jesus came, He found that he had already been in the tomb four days. . . . Jesus said to her, ‘Your brother will rise again.’ Martha said to Him, ‘I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.’ Jesus said to her. ‘I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?’ She said to Him, ‘Yes, Lord, I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.’ . . . Jesus said, ‘Take away the stone.’ Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to Him, ‘Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days.’ Jesus said to her, ‘Did I not say to you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?’ Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying. And Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, ‘Father, I thank You that You have heard Me. And I know that You always hear Me, but because of the people who are standing by I said this, that they may believe that You sent Me.’ Now when He had said these things, He cried with a loud voice, ‘Lazarus, come forth!’ And he who had died came out bound hand and foot with graveclothes, and his face was wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them. ‘Loose him, and let him go.’ "
Note: Jesus here clearly identifies two deaths: the first death, a sleep in the grave, to which all humanity is subject; and the second death, eternal destruction, which is the destiny of those who reject God’s salvation. See also John 6:57-58 "As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who feeds on Me will live because of Me. This is the bread which came down from heaven – not as your fathers ate the manna, and are dead. He who eats this bread will live forever." Those who believe on Christ are subject to mortal death – the first death, from which the righteous will be resurrected at Christ’s second coming. But believers will not experience the second death, which is eternal death.
John 20:17 "Jesus said to her, ‘Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father."
Note: Between the time of His death on Friday, and His resurrection on Sunday, Jesus did not ascend to God.
Luke 24: 36-43 (Jesus’ post-resurrection spiritual body was made of flesh and bones) "Now as they said these things, Jesus Himself stood in the midst of them, and said to them. ‘Peace to you.’ But they were terrified and frightened, and supposed they had seen a spirit. And he said to them, ‘Why are you troubled? And why do doubts arise in your hearts? Behold My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself, handle Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see I have.’ When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet. But while they still did not believe for joy, and marveled, He said to them, '‘Have you any food here?'’ So they gave Him a piece of a broiled fish and some honeycomb. And He took it and ate in their presence."
Note: Job 19: 26 teaches us that we will have fleshly bodies in the resurrection – we will not be spirits without flesh and blood: "And after my skin is destroyed, this I know, that in my flesh I shall see God."
What the Bible teaches about death
Genesis 3:19 "In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for dust you are, and to dust you shall return."
Ezekial 18:4 "The soul who sins shall die."
Job 7:21 "For now I will lie down in the dust, and You will seek me diligently, but I will no longer be."
Job 21:23, 25-26, 30 "One dies in his full strength, being wholly at ease and secure; . . . Another man dies in the bitterness of his soul, never having eaten with pleasure. They lie down alike in the dust, and worms cover them. . . . For the wicked are reserved for the day of doom; they shall be brought out on the day of wrath."
Job 7: 9, 10 "As the cloud disappears and vanishes away, so he who goes down to the grave does not come up. He shall never return to his house, nor shall his place know him anymore."
Job 33: 13-14 "Who gave Him charge over the earth? Or who appointed Him over the whole world? If He should set His heart on it, if He should gather to Himself His Spirit and His breath, all flesh would perish together, and man would return to dust."
Job 4: 17 (Man is mortal) "Can a mortal be more righteous than God?"
I Timothy 6:15, 16 (God alone is immortal) "He who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone has immortality."
Psalm 103:14-16 "For He knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust. As for man, his days are like grass; as a flower of the field, so he flourishes. For the wind passes over it, and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more."
Psalm 115:17 "The dead do not praise the Lord, nor any who go down into silence."
Ecclesiastes 3:20 "All go to one place: all are from the dust, and all return to dust."
Ecclesiastes 9:5-6 "For the living know that they will die; but the dead know nothing, and they have no more reward, for the memory of them is forgotten. Also their love, their hatred, and their envy have now perished; nevermore will they have a share in anything done under the sun."
Ecclesiaster 9: 10 "Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going."
Job 14: 20, 21 "You prevail forever against him, and he passes on; You change his countenance and send him away. His sons come to honor, and he does not know it; they are brought low, and he does not perceive it. But his flesh will be in pain over it, and his soul will mourn over it."
Note: While "body and soul" are together (the person is still alive) the individual is able to feel pain and to mourn. Once death occurs, that individual has no more capacity for perceiving anything that happens.
Genesis 2:7 "And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the gound; and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living soul."
Ecclesiastes 12:7 "Then the dust will return to the earth as it was, and the spirit will return to God who gave it."
Note: The word translated spirit in the Bible refers to breath, or the breath of life, not a personality which can exist apart from the body. When the spirit and the body are separated, the person [soul] dies. The soul ceases to exist. Illustration: lumber + nails = box. When the nails are separated from the lumber, the box ceases to exist.
This breath/spirit is the same for the animals as for man:
"For what happens to the sons of men also happens to beasts; one thing befalls them, as one dies, so dies the other. Surely, they all have one breath; man has no advantage over beasts, for all is vanity." Ecclesiastes 3:19.
"But now ask the beasts, and they will teach you; and the birds of the air, and they will tell you. . . . Who among all these does not know that the hand of the Lord has done this, in whose hand is the life of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind?" Job 12:7, 9-10.
"If He [God] should set His heart on it, if He should gather to Himself His Sprit and His breath, all flesh would perish together, and man would return to dust." Job 34:14-15
"O Lord, how manifold are Your works! In wisdom You have made them all. The eart is full of Your possessions – this great and wide sea, in which are innumerable teeming things, living things both small and great. . . . These all wait for You, that You may give them their food in due season. What you give them they gather in; You open Your hand, they are filled with good. You hide Your face, they are troubled; You take away their breath, they die and return to their dust." Psalm 104:24-25, 27-29.
Acts 2: 29, 34 "Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. . . . For David did not ascend into the heavens."
[This was spoken after Jesus’ resurrection and ascension and some 1000 years after David’s death. We now know about the custom of bone boxes -- Peter gives a clear reference that the bones of David remained in his sepulchre. God does not leave bones behind. In all records in scripture of humans going to heaven whether through translation or resurrection, they were alive and in bodily form -- their bones/body went with them (Enoch, Moses, Elijah, Jesus)]
When will the saved receive glorified incorruptible bodies, like Jesus has?
I Corinthians 15: 51-55 "Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed – in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: ‘Death is swallowed up in victory.’ ‘O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?’ "
Note: Here again, death is referred to as sleep.
Daniel: 12:13 "But you, go your way till the end; for you shall rest, and will arise to your inheritance at the end of the days."
Job 19:25-26 "For I know that my Redeemer lives, and He shall stand at last on the earth. And after my skin is destroyed, this I know, that in my flesh I shall see God. Whom I shall see for myself, and my eyes shall behold, and not another."
What does the devil teach about death?
Genesis 3:4 "And the serpent said to the woman, ‘You will not surely die.’ "
What is the real truth about mediums, spirits, seances?
Isaiah 8: 19-20 "And when they say to you, ‘Seek those who are mediums and wizards, who whisper and mutter,’ should not a people seek their God? Should they seek the dead on behalf of the living? To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them."
Leviticus 19: 31 "Give no regard to mediums and familiar spirits; do not seek after them, to be defiled by them: I am the Lord your God."
Leviticus 20: 6, 27 "And the person who turns after mediums and familiar spirits, to prostitue himself with them, I will set My face against that person and cut him off from his people. . . . A man or a woman who is a medium, or who has familiar spirits, shall surely be put to death; they shall stone them with stones. Their blood shall be upon them."
Deuteronomy 18: 10-12 "There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. For all who do these things are an abomination to the Lord, and because of these abominations the Lord your God drives them out from before you."
II Kings 23: 24 "Moreover Josiah put away those who consulted mediums and spiritists, the household gods and idols, all the abominations that were seen in the land of Judah and in Jerusalem."
Revelation 16:14 "For they are spirits of demons, performing signs, which go out to the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty."
The danger in believing that our departed loved ones are not truly dead and asleep in the grave as Jesus taught, is it leaves us vulnerable to Satan’s deception that we can communicate with the dead. If we have contact with spirits, they are are not the spirits of our departed loved ones, but rather are the spirits of Satan, evil angels.
